Canon EOS Error Codes and Solutions. Sometimes you may see an error code or message on the LCD screen when using your Canon’s EOS series camera. Is your Canon camera showing error codes Err 01, 02, 05, 20, 30, 99 or other?

During your experience with the Canon EOS system, one of the world’s most comprehensive range of digital interchangeable lens cameras, you may encounter various errors. While some of these errors may require technical service support, most of them can be resolved quickly and easily.

We have tried to explain the various EOS error codes and messages below, with information to assist you in solving your problem.

Canon EOS Error Codes and Solutions

Canon EOS Error code Error 01

Explanation: Communication between camera and lens is faulty.

Resolution: Very gently clean the electrical contacts (highlighted in red) on the camera and lens with a clean and dry cloth.

CAUTION: Take the following precautions when cleaning the contacts: Do not wipe the contacts with a wet cloth. Do not touch the contact points directly with your hands. Touching your hands may cause corrosion, which will render the camera inoperable. When cleaning the contacts on the lens side, be careful not to damage the lens surface.

Canon EOS Error code Error 02

Description: The camera cannot access the memory card.

Solution: Remove and reinsert the memory card. Format the memory card as described in the user manual. The user manual for your EOS camera is available for the Canon Europe EOS camera support page by clicking here. If formatting the memory card does not resolve the error, please replace the memory card.

Canon EOS Error code Error 03

Explanation: There are too many folders on the memory card.

Resolution: Replace the memory card with a formatted Compact Flash memory card.

Canon EOS Error code Error 04

Description: Images cannot be saved because the memory card is full.

Canon EOS Error code Error 05

Description: The built-in flash could not be raised. Resolution: Turn the power switch off and on again.

Canon EOS Error code Error 06

Description: Sensor cleaning is not possible. Resolution: Turn the power switch off and on again.

Canon EOS Error code Error 10

Description: A malfunction with the files on the memory card has been detected. Solution: Turn off the computer, then remove and reinsert the battery. Then turn it back on.

Canon EOS Error code 20 Error

Description: A malfunction has been detected with the mechanical mechanism. Solution: Turn off the computer, then remove and reinsert the battery. Then turn it back on.

Canon EOS Error code 30 Error

Explanation: A fault with the door has been detected. Solution: Turn off the computer, then remove and reinsert the battery. Then turn it back on.

Canon EOS Error code Error 40

Description: A fault has been detected in the power supply. Solution: Turn off the computer, then remove and reinsert the battery. Then turn it back on.

Canon EOS Error code 50 Error

Description: A malfunction with the electrical control has been detected. Solution: Turn off the computer, then remove and reinsert the battery. Then turn it back on.

Canon EOS Error code Error 60

Description: Anti-shooting error has occurred, lens movement may be blocked. Resolution: Check that the lens is clear of obstructions. Then turn the power switch off and on again.

Canon EOS Error code Error 70

Description: A malfunction with the images has been detected. Solution: Turn off the computer, then remove and reinsert the battery. Then turn it back on.

Canon EOS Error code Error 80

Description: A malfunction has been detected in the electrical control or images. Solution: Turn off the computer, then remove and reinsert the battery. Then turn it back on.

Canon EOS Error code Error 99

Description: This is a common error that can occur for a variety of reasons.

Solution: Turn off the computer and unplug and plug it in again. Turn the device back on. Gently clean the electrical contacts (highlighted in red) on the camera and lens with a clean, dry cloth. Gently clean the electrical contacts on the camera and flash with a clean, dry cloth.

AC – Error Message

Description: The imaging element corresponds to the movie in a film camera. If dirt or foreign matter gets on this imaging element, black spots may be recorded in the relevant part of the image. If this happens, clean the imaging element.

Resolution: Always connect the EOS camera to a home power socket using the DC coupler when performing the necessary cleaning.

If you try to clean the imaging element with the battery installed on the back, the cleaning warning message ‘AC’ flashes on the LCD panel of the camera and you cannot clean the imaging element.

bu59 / bu54 / buSY / busy

Explanation: If the camera displays bu59, bu54, buSY or busy message, it could be one of the following: Flash is recycling. The flash may not work if you shoot 20 images with the flash at short intervals. This is to protect the flash unit. Continuous Shooting took place. This indicates that the camera’s buffer memory is full and shooting cannot continue.

Connecting the EOS camera to a PC, Mac or printer

Solution: If you press the shutter button halfway and the message is displayed in the viewfinder and / or LCD screen, wait until the screen turns off. This leads to recycling or clearing the buffer of the flash; this ensures full use of the camera.

If the camera is connected to a PC, Mac or printer, disconnect it before using it. NOTE: Please do not turn off your EOS camera while ‘buSY’ is showing. This may cause problems with the EOS camera or Compact Flash card.

The battery level is very low. I cannot clean the sensor

Note: Damage to the image sensor may occur due to insufficient battery power causing the shutter to close while cleaning the image sensor and the curtain. Resolution: Use a fully charged battery or a power outlet before you start cleaning the image sensor.

Picture cannot be played

Description: The message ‘Cannot play image is displayed when trying to play images on the camera. This error can occur for the following reasons:

You are trying to play back images taken with a non-Canon camera. Images on the memory card are transferred to a computer and rotated or edited and written back to the memory card.

Memory card is faulty.

CBC

Description: This is a warning regarding the date / time battery level. Date / time battery maintains camera’s date and time. When the date / time battery power is low, ‘CbC’ appears on the LCD panel.

CLEAn / CLn / CCd

Description: The image sensor is like the film in a film camera. If any dust gets on the image sensor, a dark speck may appear in the images. The mirror will lock and the shutter will open, ‘CLEAn’ or ‘CLn’ will flash on the LCD panel.

Resolution: Turn the power switch off and then back on to automatically enable the sensor cleaning function. Alternatively, you can manually activate the sensor cleaning function as follows:

In the Setup tab of the menu, select ‘Sensor Cleaning’; then press SET button. Turn Quick Control Dial to select Clear Now and press the SET button. Select OK and press the SET button. The screen will show clean and there will be a shutter sound but no picture will be taken.

ErrCF / CardErr / The folder number is full
Description: When the folder number reaches 999 and the file number reaches 9999, this error message appears even if there is space left on the card.

Solution: Remove and reinsert the memory card. Try using a different memory card. If possible, transfer all images on the card to a computer and then format the card with the camera. The card can then return to normal. Insert a new Compact Flash memory card. When a newly formatted Compact Flash card is inserted, the folder number starts from 100 and the image file number starts from 0001.

FullCF / CardFull / CF Card Full
Description: No picture can be taken or saved.

Solution: If the Compact Flash memory card is full, delete unnecessary images. If deleting images did not resolve the error, please replace with a new Compact Flash memory card.

L – Error Message

Description: If the [LOCK] switch is set to the right and you try one of the locked camera controls, ‘L’ will be displayed in the viewfinder and on the LCD panel. [LOCK] is displayed on the shooting settings screen. Resolution: Move the [LOCK] knob to the left to release and enable functions.

CF / No CF Card / No Card In Camera

Description: This message may appear for the following reasons:

If there is no Compact Flash memory card inserted and you press the shutter button.
If there is no Compact Flash memory card installed and you start the camera.
If there is no Compact Flash memory card installed and you try to format the card.
Resolution: Insert a Compact Flash memory card.
