Sony A7 IV Sensor Review : Very High Score 97 Points

DxOMark completed their full in-depth review for 33MP BSI-CMOS sensor inside the Sony A7 IV camera. According to their sensor review; the Sony a7 IV (AmazonB&HAdorama) achieved an excellent overall DxOMark sensor score of 97 points, with a combination of 25.4 bits color depth, 14.7 EV dynamic range, and 3379 ISO low-light score.

Sony A7 IV Sensor Review Test Results

  • Sony a7 IV is the first camera to feature a new 33-megapixel BSI CMOS sensor, achieving a high score of 97 on the DxOMark and is ranked 7th among all sensors including medium format. This score is the same as Nikon D810 and Sony RX1R II, and the sensor performance is close to that of Sony A1 (98 pints) and Sony a7R IV (99 pints).
  • In terms of base sensitivity, Sony a7 IV has achieved good results in color reproduction and dynamic range, and the low light ISO has also been very good.
  • Comparison with other models (color reproduction): In comparison with Sony a7 III, a slight improvement can be seen up to ISO400, but it is not so different. Subsequent sensitivities are similar, but Sony a7 III is slightly better. Compared to Canon EOS R6, Sony a7 IV was superior in almost all sensitivities, with a difference of 1.3 to 1.0 bits up to ISO400.
  • Comparison with other models (dynamic range): In the low sensitivity range up to ISO200, a slight improvement is seen compared to Sony a7 III. It’s interesting that the gain switch is ISO 400 for Sony a7 IV instead of the ISO 800 for Sony a7 III. After that, they are almost the same. Compared to Canon EOS R6,   R6 has a slightly lower maximum dynamic range than the Sony a7 IV, and it does not reach Sony a7 IV unless it is in the high sensitivity range.
  • Comparison with other models (Low Light ISO): The sensor of  Sony a7 IV has a similar result to Sony a7 III, and the difference is only -0.14EV. The EOS R6’s sensor is virtually the same as  Sony a7 IV.
  • Conclusion: The new Sony a7 IV sensor isn’t much different from the traditional 24MP sensor, but with a 37.5% increase in pixel count. This may seem like a gradual evolution, but with various improvements in still and video features, Sony a7 IV has become a very attractive option.
